Ganesha

Lord Ganesha is the Hindu deity and is seen as the blend of human and animal parts which symbolizes the ideals of perfection by Hindu sages. He represents the power of the Supreme Being that protects you by disregarding any obstacles and ensuring success. Hindus worship Him before practicing any religious, or spiritual rhythms. When you read into the Hindu mythology, it is said that Lord Ganesha is the eldest son before Lord Subramanya and daughter Jyoti of Lord Shiva and the Divine Mother Parvati.

Here is Lord Ganesha‘s symbolism in some detail:

  • Elephant head, small mouth, and large ears: The large head of an elephant supports the idea to “Think Big” and promotes wisdom and understanding. The small mouth represents the idealism to speak less and to listen more. Which is the reason for the large ears, to assimilate other people’s ideas and appreciate them.
  • The Trunk and Tusk: The Trunk is symbolism of efficiency where it can pick up a toothpick off the ground as well as uproot a tree, and although there is no known human instrument that has that operating possibility, it plays on the human mind where we must be strong enough to face whatever highs and lows we receive from the outside world. Ganesha only has one tusk (the other one is broken) because of the fact that we need to keep good and throw away the bad. The right tusk is said to represent wisdom whereas the left one is emotion, and if we are able to conquer our emotions with wisdom, then we will attain perfection.
  • Elephant eyes: are small to make them look like they’re squinting, this would look like you’re concentrating. Elephant eyes were chosen because they are said to be able to depict objects bigger than what they actually are. This is a symbolism because if we want to attain humility, one must set aside its pride and perceive the other individual as bigger than himself.
  • The Four arms and various objects: As in the tusks, the right hand side portrays reason/wisdom whereas the left hand side is emotion. The axe is there to symbolise the cutting off of attachments and conquering emotions. The rope is there to retain the good and help you pull yourself up to the highest goal that is perfection. The lower right hand is shown in a blessing pose, which is there because Lord Ganesha always blessed the ones who are devoted to Him.
  • The Belly: In this will be a human heart, which is a symbol of compassion and kindness towards everyone and everything. It is big to portray the large capacity one must have in order to confront pleasant and unpleasant experiences one might face.
  • The Mouse: The mouse is a symbol of desire. One must keep it under a close control to attain perfection. It is deliberately placed under the Ganesha as this depicts the perfect person who has conquered his or her ego and so the mouse will look up to him/her.
