We’ve rounded up the best quotes from the Bhagavad Gita to deliver a little wisdom from the ancients. Take a look at our other inspiring quotes posts here and here.

The Bhagavad Gita is considered the Book Of Yoga – the sixth part of the ancient Indian epic the Mahabarata. The Mahabarata is an expansive Indian epic story that is more than 1800 years old, which spans several books, the sixth of which is the Bhagavad Gita. While part of a larger epic, the Bhagvad Gita is commonly published and read independently of the wider story.

Many Yogis see the Bhagavad Gita as the spiritual accompaniment to Asana practice, and reference it often. It is used as the main source book for the spiritual teaching of Bhakti Yoga, and many of you will have also heard it referenced by your teachers. Beloved by not only Yogis, the Bhagavad Gita has been referenced in many films and popular western media, as well as modern opera, poetry and music. You’ve probably seen or heard a reference to the Mahabarata or Bhagavad Gita without even knowing it!

What Is The Bhagavad Gita About?

The Bhagavad Gita in simple terms is a religious dialogue between the hero Arjuna and the God Krishna. In this stage of the epic, Krishna is Arjunas charioteer in his battle against his kin after 13 years of exile. Krishna is offering advice and spiritual guidance to him and assuaging his doubts. However, like all of the Mahabarata, the text exists on many levels. It is simultaneously an epic story, metaphysical manual and spiritual guide. It’s importance to Yogis stems mainly from it’s outlining of the spiritual paths to salvation, which includes the path of Bhakti(devotional) Yoga. If you’re a Yoga person, we urge you to give it a read, as it is packed with wisdom and inspiration for spiritual development.
