The Meaning of Sahasrara – The Crown Chakra

The Meaning of Sahasrara, or the Crown Chakra, is essentially the spiritual self. Working on the Crown Chakra is all about focusing on the higher self. Sahasrara is associated with the pursuit of spiritual peace, and connecting to higher consciousness or state of being. It is commonly pictured as concentric rings of flower petals, which represent the divine lotus. Sahasrara means ‘thousand petal lotus’.

So what else is the Crown Chakra associated with?

  • Spiritual connections
  • Divinity
  • The higher self
  • The spiritual self
  • Unity and inter-connectivity of all things
  • Oneness with the universe
  • Knowledge that can’t be described or named with words
  • True consciousness, separate from the physical world

What are some tips you can give about the Crown Chakra?

The meaning of Sahasrara is the opening of the spiritual self, like a lotus opening itself to the sun. We are at our best when we acknowledge that we are all beings of this universe, connected together with an energy we can’t really comprehend.  For some it’s difficult to accept that maybe humans aren’t meant to know it all, only to feel it all. To attempt to quantify spiritual feelings is an attempt to hold on to smoke.

Striving to be part of something greater than yourself is what drives humanity to progress. The first people who laid the first stones altars to praise divinity were striving to touch something greater, a feeling they had of a greater purpose. When we meditate on the Crown Chakra we are reaching for that indescribable energy that binds the universe together.

If the Root Chakra exists to remind us of our earthly roots, the Crown Chakra exists to remind us to reach for that which we do not have the words to describe. The things that we just know, in our spirit, to be true. For some this energy is used in worship of a deity, others; the cycle of nature and planets.

But make sure your Root Chakra stops your Crown Chakra from floating you off into space!

Don’t let the pursuit of divine peace cause you to forget you’re still a living being, down here on earth with the rest of us! Spiritual obsession can be damaging to the physical being if it’s not kept in control – and you may get so lost in space you lose sight of earth entirely. You’ll find yourself believing just about everything, regardless of where the information is coming from.

On the other end of things – watch out for selfish thinking and inflexible individualism. Not considering the bigger picture or a greater universal design can lead to moral lapses, apathy and arrogance.  You’ll find yourself acting like a jealous dragon, hoarding wealth and love and ideas, at a detriment to your spirit.

True spiritual peace will not leave you desperate to feel it again, or as if you need your spiritual ‘fix’ to get you through the day. That is a sign of an over active crown chakra, and you need to come back down to earth for a little bit.

As with all the Chakras, self-awareness is the key to proper energy flow. Be self aware. Be moderate. Give love. Remember the lotus in meditation, be open, and let universal energy guide and strengthen you.
