Time and again all of us have been exposed to the benefits of yoga and how it helps your mind, body and soul. But lets just have some fun and look at some interesting, bizarre facts about Yoga which you probably did not know.

  1. The ancient practice of yoga is thought to have originated around 600 B.C.E…nearly 2,615 years ago!
  2. You have a dominant nostril….nostril dominance naturally switches every two and a half hours. One can switch switch nostrils with concentration & practice. Also, breathing with the right nostril will create a more energetic state of mind, while breathing with the left will have a relaxing effect
  3. One of the first western yogapractitioner was Henry David Thoreau…he began his practice during his time of self-isolation at Walden Pond
  4. Inversions can help fix organs which become droopy as we age…A regular inversions practice combats the effects of gravity, and can help return your organs to their original positions
  5. Ashtanga tradition observes “Moon Days” as yoga holidays…..Since the human body is over 70% water, the phases of the moon are thought to affect our bodies in a similar way. For this reason, the Ashtanga tradition designates Moon Days as official rest days from yoga practice
  6. Kino MacGregor is the youngest woman ever to be certified to teach Ashtanga by its founder Sri K. Pattabhi Jois….At the age of 29, after seven years of consistently traveling to Mysore, India, Kino was certified by Sri K. Pattabhi Jois to teach Ashtanga
  7. Flexibility isn’t just of the body, the mind has an effect too….Telling ourselves we’re ‘not very flexible’ has a definite effect on how ‘flexible’ we are. By stepping into a class and telling ourselves we’re ‘not flexible’, we set ourselves up to be rigid and stiff
  8. Largest yoga class at a single venue was with 35,000 people…..this was held on the New Delhi Global Yoga Day on June 21st 2015. That’s a lot of smelly feet!!
