So coming back to our blog….so how I thought about writing on yoga for diabetics. This year the UN focussed on diabetes for the World Health Day. Its one major concern for the world population and is often considered to be a very serious lifestyle disease which is on the rise.
To look at some figures,
– About 422 million people worldwide have diabetes, a number likely to more than double in the next 20 years
-In 2012, it was the direct cause of 1.5 million deaths
– Type 2 Diabetes (seen in people who don’t do enough physical activity, and who are overweight or obese) accounts for around 90% of all diabetes worldwide. Reports of type 2 diabetes in children have increased worldwide
These figures are disturbing which call for some action and attention. Yoga which is know for its health benefits can work wonders for patients suffering for this lifestyle disorder. Regular yoga practice can help reduce the level of sugar in the blood, along with lowering blood pressure, keeping your weight in check, reducing the severity of the symptoms and slowing the rate of progression of the disease. It also lessens the possibility of further complications
Here are a few poses that would help keep your insulin levels in check:
1. Pranayam: Breathing in deeply and breathing out helps oxygenate your blood, and improves circulation. It also calms the mind and gives your rattled nerves some much needed rest
2. Setubandhasana or Bridge Pose: This pose helps keep one’s blood pressure in control, relaxes the mind, improves digestion, and stretches the neck and spine
3. Vajrasana or Thunderbolt Pose: Great pose to relax the mind, improve digestion and loose weight
4. Sarvangasana or Shoulder Stand: This pose is essentially known for its ability to regulate the working of the thyroid glands
5. Halasana or Plough Pose: It stimulates the thyroid glands, parathyroid glands, lungs and abdominal organs, therefore helping the blood rush to your head and face, improves digestion and keeps the hormonal levels in check
6. Paschimotasana or Forward Bend Pose: This pose helps the blood to flow to the face. Apart from that, it helps the stomach function better, strengthens the thigh muscles and relaxes the back and arms
In addition, diabetes requires you to regulate your diet and eat the right foods. Certain herbs such as Jambhul (Eugenia jambolana), Bitter Gourd/bitter melon (Momordica charantia), turmeric, and Fenugreek in Ayurveda are believed to be beneficial in keeping your condition under control.
But first and foremost, prevention is better than cure and hence always remember that an active life with the correct diet is extremely essential for a healthy body. Ensure that you make it a part of your daily routine.
