After big setbacks and delays due to Covid – our Costa Blanca retreats are on the home stretch now! We have two Villa locations and both needed building work doing. We use the term ‘needed’ loosely though – the Villas were fine for a holiday let. But they didn’t have the Yogi soul and the retreat atmosphere! The experience of a retreat is a lot different from a regular holiday, and we needed to reflect that. Every single corner of these houses has been tailored to the visitor’s absolute immersion in their time away. We wanted to create a place of peace, reflection and beauty that nourished the soul as well as the body.
What Does Building A Yoga Retreat Space Involve?
Before the look, before the furniture, before the food – you’ve got to consider Yoga! What do students need? What do teachers need? Our Spanish Yoga retreats need to be functional as well as beautiful. It was our dream to have a Thai style open air studio. Spain has such beautiful weather and our villas are close to both the sea and the mountains. The healing air is the perfect partner to Yoga! The studio also needs to offer teachers an easy and convenient space to teach in and support their students.
To make sure we have a proper designing hand in how the retreats turn out, we also made tile designs, floor plans, mood boards and endless brainstorming sessions. All while trying to communicate them to builders through the language barrier!
We want every single room, every single space, and every décor choice to support our visitors in letting go and enjoying the retreat atmosphere. It’s the little touches that elevate an object to something that sparks emotion. We had pieces of furniture hand carved in Rajasthan, as well as picking up vintage and antique pieces on our travels (no reason Spanish Yoga retreats can’t have a taste of Indian design!). The handmade touch adds beauty, but it adds soul too. These craftspeople produce the most amazing work. We even got to see some of it being made in person!

We made up some floor plans (those of you that follow us on facebook and instagram will have already seen them) to try and explain how the rooms would be laid out, as well as what structures we needed building.
About The Alicante Javea Area
We’re right next to the beach and mountains! There’s plenty of walking trails, a farmers market and shops. What’s really exciting though is the incredible opportunities for outdoor meditation! We love outdoor Yoga. The sea has an eternal, cyclical energy that is so transformational you have to embrace it when you can. Imagine morning meditations in a beautiful spot on the beach, far from anyone else. Imagine taking in the sounds and scents of the ocean while at perfect peace… I’m not sure I’d want to close my eyes. I think I’d just like to watch the movements of the waves, and breathe along with the sea.
